IncisionAcademy offers an online platform for training of surgical skills

for healthcare providers, through the use of instructional step by step

films. Their content is available 24/7 via multiple electronic devices(smart

phone, tablet, laptop or desktop). Their portfolio is mainly general surgery as well as the most common obs/gyn procedures and they have presence in the Netherlands, Indonesia, Ghana and Kenya.

In 2016 University of Nairobi (UoN) Department of Surgery granted IncisionAcademy the opportunity of sharing their products with the final year medical students during the Basic Surgical Skills course. The final year students were provided with a 3-D learning platform for keeping the lessons fresh after the training at the Nairobi Surgical Skills Centre (NSSC) and as they practise at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). They were also introduced to relevant instructional surgical vidos to aid their learning process and for reference during their internship.

IncisionAcademy plans to work with the Department of Surgery at UoN to run a pilot to prove the value of Incision product at both Undergraduate and Post graduate training.

Mission Restore

Mission Restore was founded by Dr Kaveh Alizadeh with a mission of creating a world in which local surgeons are empowered with knowledge, skills and support required to treat debilitating injuries within their own communities. In 2015 for the first time, Mission Restore sponsored a student to study Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Nairobi. The founder, Prof Kaveh Alizadeh visited the UoN Dept of Surgery on Thursday 17th December 2015 to discuss formalization of collaborations. He gave a lecture on ' 'Management of complex pediatric wounds' at the surgical grand round held on that day.

He met faculty and students and held discussions on further collaborations with the Chairman Dept of Surgery (Prof PLW Ndaguatha) and the Thematic Head Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Prof SO Khainga).

In 2016 a telemedicine link between the UoN Dept of Surgery and New York Medical School will be set up. This will facilitate exchange of knowledge between the two institutions.

University Of Toronto: Burn Prevention - Africa

In collaboration with AMREF Kenya (the African Medical Research and Foundation Kenya), the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Toronto is undertaking a study to identify the magnitude and factors that contribute to burn injuries, including assessing perception of the community towards burn injuries and identifying potential prevention strategies. We are interested in finding out the answers to the following primary questions:

  • Who, in Kenya, suffers from burn injuries and under what circumstances?
  • What factors predispose people to burn injuries in urban, slum and rural settings in Kenya?
  • What are the underlying knowledge, attitudes and practices that lead to burn injuries?
  • How can these be changed to prevent burn injuries?
  • What measures could be put in place to effectively prevent the occurrence of burn injuries?
