General Surgery
Overview
The original department of surgery has undergone various changes since its inception in 1974. At inception all thematic units were housed in th esame department. Over time various departments have broken off from the original parent general surgery department. These include the Departments of Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic surgery and Anaesthesia. It is hoped that in the not too distant future the unit of Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) will also apply for separation as an independent department.
The unit of general surgery teaches both undergraduates and postgraduate Master of Medicine in general surgey students in addition to BDS and maxillofacila surgery students.

Thematic Units
Courses in general surgery
This thematic area offers a Master of Medicine in General Surgery (MMed Surgery) degree course and also participates in the teaching of MB ChB degree course.
Lectures and tutorials are also offered for Bachelor of Dental Surgery undergraduate students as well as Maxillofacial and Dental Surgery postgraduate students.
Career Opportunities
The country currently has a short fall of all types of surgeons
General surgeons are in high demand and are the backbone of the specialist surgical service. Each yeear there are about 5 to 10 graduates produced nationaly and this is not able to meet national needs.
Faculty positions are advertised online and in the media when vacancies arise. Applications for the master of Medicine in General Surgery degree programme are also advertised through the Board of Post-graduate Studies every year.
