Information for International Students

There are many reasons for traveling out of your native country for surgical studies.  You individually will have to consider carefully how our training will fit into your long-term educational and professional plans.  The department of surgery welcomes international students wishing to persue a career in surgery with us.

We guarantee you relevant and quality surgical training.

Application for a surgical programme: Application forms for any of the surgical programmes can be obtained at a fee from the Board of Post Graduate Studies.  (Contact details are available on this website).

Post graduate courses offered in the department are;

  1. Master of Medicine in Neurosurgery
  2. Master of Medicine in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery
  3. Master of Medicine in Paediatric Surgery
  4. Master of Medicine in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery
  5. Master of Medicine in General Surgery
  6. Master of Medicine in Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
  7. Fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia of the University of Nairobi

Admission period:  The academic year usually commences in September/October.  Therefore please apply in good time.

Finances: Please go through the various fee structures provided for our programmes to see if the financial outlay you have planned will be adequate.  Please remember this structure does not include accommodation, food and other expenses.

Interview test: As the places available for foreign students at postgraduate level may be limited it is possible there will be some competition.  You may therefore be required to undertake an admission interview.  Please prepare for this.  The level of the interview for postgraduate programme entry is likely to be at the final year bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery training.

Visa and other regulations:  It will be your responsibility to ensure you acquire the correct student visa for your stay here.  The department will be happy to supply you with the required supporting documentation to assist you in applying for or renew your student visa.

Student support organisations:  In order to fit in, you will receive support on this.  Please contact the chairman on arrival and he/she will introduce you to the support team in the department.  They will provide orientation of the department.  They will also direct you to the relevant student organisation(s) for you, for example the Association of Medical Students of the University of Nairobi (AMSUN) for undergraduate students.  There are also many social and cultural student groups you may join.

Language:  In the Department of Surgery as in all the university, English is the medium of communication.  Not all patients however speak English.  This should not worry you as there will always be an avenue of getting translation.  If you are from the Africa region you may not have many difficulties due to similarities of our languages across the region
