OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY, HEAD & NECK SURGERY UNIT

Course Title & Duration: Masters in Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery degree (MMed ORL-HNS) of The University of Nairobi (UoN). This is a five-year programme offered at UoN's Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) campus and also at accredited external rotation sites.

Philosophy: The philosophy of teaching shall be based on adult learning principles inclined towards realizing the needs of the learner in a learner-centred approach.

The goal is to produce competent, autonomous, outstanding Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck surgeons who serve the communities they attend to with passion and purpose.

Rationale: The MMed Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery programme shall produce surgeons with the necessary skills to cope with the global challenges of modern-day surgical practice.

Objective: The objective of the programme is to produce qualified surgeons with the knowledge, skills and attitudes which shall enable them to function effectively as otorhinolaryngologists and head and neck surgeons.

Admission Requirements: The Common Regulations for the Master of Medicine Degree in UoN shall apply. The candidates eligible for admission into the programme shall fulfil the following conditions:

Hold a minimum of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) degree of the University of Nairobi or any equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the University Senate.
The degree should be registrable by the Medical Practitioner’s and Dentists Council of Kenya for purposes of training and learners must produce evidence of registration and retention with the council or equivalent at commencement of training.
The learners shall be required to have a Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance cover before commencement of training.

Schedule of intakes: Admission is done once every year.

Mode of Delivery: This programme shall be delivered through face-face mode, self-directed learning and e-learning (ODel), synchronous and asynchronous.

Attachment Opportunities: These include Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret (Kenya), Kijabe Hospital (Kenya) and University of Kentucky (USA).

Career Prospects/Opportunities: Graduands end up in successful employment or careers in private and public sector or academia. The programme can lead to sub-specialization training in any of the Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery sub-specialties.

Overview

Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Unit ( Formerly Ear, Nose, Throat, Head and Neck Surgery Thematic Unit) is responsible for the training of Otorhinolaryngology/ENT surgeons in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa. It is within UoN Dept of Surgery Department one of the seven founder departments when the medical school opened its doors to students on 2nd July 1967. Postgraduate training was originally conducted in collaboration with external colleges and universities notably those in the United Kingdom (Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburg and Ireland). The first local ENT postgraduate student Dr. Morris Podho was admitted in 1986 and the first ENT surgeon graduated in 1989.
