The newly refurbished Department of Surgery was officially opened by the University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama and Britam Holdings Group Managing Director Dr. Benson Wairegi on 22nd December, 2020.
Britam sponsored the refurbishment of the Department which has 7 thematic specialized units at a cost of KES 3 million.
Speaking during the event, Prof. Kiama thanked Britam for giving the Department a facelift.
“Thanks for using funds from Britam to do this kind of work at UoN. As a University, we are grateful for the support and look forward to partner with you in more and more projects in future,” Prof. Kiama said.
His sentiments were echoed by College of Health Sciences Principal, Prof. James Machoki M’Imunya who thanked Britam for the generous financial support especially during this tough period of COVID-19.
On his part, Dr. Wairegi said Britam was happy with the collaboration and association with UoN.
“We have been able to contribute to the work you do which is a big responsibility you have for the nation. As Britam we believe the money we make can be used to make impact in the lives of others and that is why we supported this project,” Dr. Wairegi said.
The refurbishment included repair of the wooden floor and carpeting, repainting of the walls, lighting of the rooms and corridors.
In addition to the repairs, Britam also installed audio visual equipment in the seminar room and a podium equipped with microphones and multiple speakers. The screens will be digitized with wifi and special theater camera than can transmit live surgeries from the theater, thereby enhancing the learning environment for the students.
