MASTER OF MEDICINE IN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

Overview

Orthopaedic surgery is the study of the principles and procedures used in preventing, diagnosing, caring for and treating musculoskeletal disease, illness, and injury in humans and the maintenance of general health.

The master of orthopaedic surgery course was born from the need to provide orthopaedic surgical care for the Kenyan population specifically and theinternational community in general. It was started in 2006 targeting a ratio of one orthopaedic surgeon to a population of one hundred thousand persons.

PHILOSOPHY

The University of Nairobi philosophy is guided by the need to connect and inspire the Kenyan community, provide leadership and stewardship and give hope and faith to the Kenyan society that it can excel in whatever it chooses to do with passion, moral responsibility and a strong sense of patriotism. The programme will produce orthopaedic surgeons in line with this philosophy.

RATIONALE

The 2016 ratio of physician per population for Kenya is 2/100,000. Orthopaedic surgery being a subspecialty has a much worse ratio with the majority of the population unable to access the service. The majority of the relatively few Orthopaedic surgeons available are concentrated in urban areas further compounding the access to service to the general population. It is thus imperative to train many more competent and skilled Orthopaedic surgeons to serve the community.

GOAL OF THE PROGRAMME

The goal of the course is to provide the participant with the opportunity to develop the confidence, principles and skills of Orthopaedic surgery in line with the University of Nairobi’s mission and vision.

  • Produce an Orthopaedic surgeon who can analyse signs and symptoms of orthopaedic conditions and correctly diagnose, treat and manage them.
  • Produce a well-rounded orthopaedic surgeon knowledgeable and comfortable in the areas of research, innovation and collaboration, and who is able to create and formulate new ideas and policies for the benefit of the community.
  • Be able to acquire, teach and pass on knowledge to others in the areas of orthopaedic health, cost effectiveness and leadership.
