Overview

Philosophy of the Programme

To train competent and relevant anaesthesiologists for local and international labour needs in keeping with prevailing trends of the time and adhering to the highest levels of professionalism, ethics and personal integrity for both students and staff.

Rationale of the Programme

Anaesthesia is an essential service in modern medical practice and health delivery systems all over the world. It is the most important scientific discovery in recent times and has revolutionized the practice of surgery and related subjects.

Goals of the Programme

1. To train Anaesthesiologists with adequate knowledge, skills and professional attitudes essential to a safe practice of anaesthesia, critical care medicine and pain management.

2. To train anesthesiologists with adequate knowledge in medical common problems in surgery and medicine.

Mode of Delivery of the Programme

Lectures, class discussions, oral presentations, tutorial groups, simulation, workshops and journal clubs.

The course leading to the award of the Degree of Master of Medicine in Anaesthesia (MMed Anaesthesia) shall extend over a minimum period of 4 years and a maximum period of 8 years of fulltime training.

The degree program shall be offered on fulltime basis, in two parts – Part I (one year) and Part II (3 years).

Year one of study will consist of the following courses: Physiology, Pharmacology and Physics and Clinical Measurements. The students will be introduced to clinical anaesthesia sessions, practical anaesthesia for operative theatre work and clinical intensive care rotation. The examinable units or courses will be Physiology,Pharmacology and Physics & Clinical Measurements. The logbook shall be introducedso that clinical practice can be recorded.

In the second year of study (junior residency in clinical anaesthesia), emphasis will be devoted to Principles and Practice of Anaesthesia; Principles and Practice of Surgery and Medicine including Principles and Practice of Critical Care Therapy and Pain Management. Each candidate shall be expected to select a research topic leading to a dissertation. The approved proposal of the project shall be expected to be ready at the end of this year.

In the third and fourth years of study (senior residency), the candidate will be expected to do anaesthesia related clinical rotations in the following; General Surgery, Orthopaedic, Neurosurgery, Cardiac Anaesthesia, Paediatrics, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, Oral & Maxillofacial, Obstetrics, Trauma and Critical Care Unit areas. The candidate shall also be expected to complete the dissertation work during this period.

During the third year the candidate shall be expected to complete a three month external elective attachment/rotation in a facility approved and recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board under supervision by faculty members.

Continuous assessment shall be carried out throughout the four years of the course and during journal club meetings. Teaching shall be in form of lectures, tutorials and supervised practical demonstrations in operating theatres, critical care areas, emergency department and wards.

Eligible candidates for admission into this program shall be required to fulfil the following conditions:

a) Holders of the Degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

(MBChB) of this University or its equivalent as recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi.

b) Shall have completed one year of internship in a medical institution approved by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board of Kenya and shall have been registered or registrable by that Board.

c) Shall have sat and passed a pre-entry interview organized by the Board of the school of Medicine. Only foreign applicants will be exempted from the interview.

d) Also required will be letters of reference from TWO academic referees.

e) Certificate of proof of proficiency in English.

f) On entry, the candidate shall be formally registered by the Board of Postgraduate Studies of the University of Nairobi and designated as a Senior House Officer (SHO) in Anaesthesia.

Course Exemptions

a) An applicant seeking exemption of course credits undertaken in other institutions that are recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate may on the recommendation of the School Board and the Board of Postgraduate Studies be allowed to transfer credit up to one third of the courses offered in the program provided the following conditions are fulfilled;

b) The applicant shall submit formal applications seeking courses exemption to the Director, Graduate School through the Dean, School of Medicine.

c) Applicants shall only be exempted from course units equivalent to those offered in the University of Nairobi and this shall be allowed only in non-clinical courses in the first year especially on basic sciences like pharmacology, physiology and physics and clinical measurements.

d) Evidence of course (unit) content and contact hours shall be attached to the application.

e) Exemptions shall not be allowed in the research project and the subsequent dissertation.
