2019 World Hearing Day commemoration

The University of Nairobi (UoN) College of Health Sciences (CHS) in a collaborative effort with Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and Operation Ear Drop (EOD) carried out free ear screening to commemorate the World Hearing Day 2019.

The event which was graced by CHS Principal, Prof. James Machoki was held on 4th March, 2019 at the Principal’s Court, CHS.

Prof. Machoki was accompanied by EOD Kenya Chairperson Dr. Chimmy Olende, Dr. E. Waiguru, from the Ministry of Health, Marie Madera from National Hospital Insurance Fund, Dr. Kiboi, Department of Surgery, UoN, Prof. Isaac Macharia and Dr. Serah Ndegwa both from Department of Surgery (UoN).

The speakers at the event insisted on the need for all key stakeholders to continue training hearing care professionals, ensure access to hearing technologies and communication services, and regulate sound exposure as advocated by WHO as action plan, in addition to providing support to patients with hearing problems.

The event was aimed at raising awareness about the importance of hearing and encouraging people to check their hearing regularly, practice safe listening and allow health workers to check the hearing status of other people in their communities. The theme of this year’s event was: ‘Check your hearing!’

Ear specialists and other health professionals from both UoN and KNH offered free ear screening and treatment of ear diseases to the patients who came at the camp

The event was sponsored by Kenyatta National Hospital, UoN, Operation Eardrop (K), World Health Organization among other key stakeholders.
