Inset: Dr. Fred Kambuni (L) and Dr. Chris Musau (R), the two were awarded the Order of the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) by President Uhuru Kenyatta after leading a medical team that successfully separated the twins in November.
The overall team leaders of the team that separated the conjoined twins early November, 2016 at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) were in December 2016 recognized with national awards.
Dr. Fred Kambuni, an alumnus of the University of Nairobi, and Dr. Chris Musau, a lecturer at the Department of Surgery were both awarded the Order of the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Dr. Kambuni was the overall team leader in the planning, preparation and in the surgery that took 23 hours and is the head of Paediatric Surgery at KNH, while Dr. Musau, was the surgical team leader.
It is now almost two months since the twins were separated and their wounds are almost completely healed.
They are still partly being fed through Naso-Gastric Tubes (NGT) because of poor appetite but they are expected to be feeding well orally and be able to walk around the ward within two weeks.
