The nation has a short fall of cardiothoracic surgeons. There are about ten cardiothoracic surgeons to serve the whole contry situated in six active sites.
This is the first postgraduate training programme of its kind in Eastern Africa and the unit will go a long way to filling in the national shortfall. It will provide an opportunity for more potential cardiothoracic surgeons to train locally without having to travel abroad.
Applications for the master of Medicine in cardiothoracic and vascular degree programme is also advertised through the Board of Post-graduate Studies every year. Adverts are usually around the month of March.
The unit currently is staffed with six staff and it is hoped will become a department in itself in future. This will probably require additional staff. Faculty positions (when they arise), are advertised online and in the media.
